STUDIO CALLIGRAPHY WORKSHOPS
BEGINNING ITALIC:This class requires no previous artistic skills and is a wonderful way to learn about this amazing, fast-moving field of contemporary art. Students will be introduced several styles of calligraphy including Italic, Copperplate, Blackletter
and exciting contemporary work. Fundamentals of beautiful Italic writing using a broad edge fountain pen allow student to gain confidence and work at their own pace. Lower and upper case letters, numbers and punctuation are studied and incorporated into finished, simple layouts. Calligraphy is not only a beautiful and useful artistic technique, but a fun and meditative way to unwind. .....and great way to enhance your own art. As a fashion designer based in NYC Suzanne worked in the Orient for 25 years and was deeply influenced by Asian arts. She has taught calligraphy for many years and studied with many contemporary masters. |

A flexible schedule is possible Tuesday—Saturday, beginning in 2024
All supplies except pen are provided (approx. $12.)
A two-hour, five-week beginner's workshop is $125.

ITERMEDIATE ITALIC:
Study of flourished capitals with introduction of the traditional dip pens and gouaches used by professionals. More advanced individual projects are completed. Students are introduced to calligraphy suppliers, contemporary artists and periodicals with opportunity to try metallic inks and learn about different calligraphy papers. A minimum of basic materials are required.
BEGINNING COPPERPLATE:
The elegant font of weddings, Copperplate is a style of handwriting using a pointed pen originally developed in the 1500's. Traditionally an oblique pen holder is used to allow for easy flourishing and movement. The thick and thin lines of the font are accomplished by learning to apply pressure to the nib point. Both minuscule (lower case) and majuscle (uppercase) letters are studied. A minimum of basic materials are required.
FUN AND EASY 24 KT RAISED GOLD LEAF:
This class is recommended for both artists and students of calligraphy. Simple, easy to follow techniques of gilding will allow the fear of working with real, "ulta-thin" gold leaf to be a thing of the past. Tooling finished leaf in both traditional and more natural—oriented ways will be explored with study of contemporary and medieval gilders for reference. A minimum of basic materials are required—paper, leaf and tools for carving leaf will be provided.
