Contemplation Vessels, Bundles, Casings & Ripe Forms & Bulbs
Contemplation Vessels:
Vessels are ancient shapes of functional containment, especially for water, and,metaphorically, to contain ideas. Contemplation Vessels have a serene presence either indoors or out, with water in them or without. They create a focal point for resting one’s mind and inspire imagination differently in their stillness. The heavens are there, in the vessel’s center, in that vast empty space suggested by the quiet. These pieces hold spiritual nourishment by engaging reflective mediation and reverie. They speak to the same quiet spiritual appreciation of a boulder placed justso. They are perfect containers for Emptiness.

Bundles:

These are visual metaphors for the obligations and responsibilities all of us carry which define our lives.
No one can tell, from observing another’s bundle, whether it contains bittersweet burdens or joyous treasures… or perhaps a measure of both. These sculptures start as soft, yielding clay and are finished after firing by being bound with aged twisted copper wire and weathered clamps that served for over a hundred years as lightening rod grounding-wire on a barn in Roxbury, CT. The wire was chosen for its aesthetic beauty as well as provenance by reminding us that life is very much grounded by what we choose to carry in our bundles. Casings are self-excreted or
self-constructed protection many insects create for metamorphosis to occur. They are protective covering more primitive, more elemental than a cocoon. My Casings are sculptural vessels metaphorically protecting a spiritual, emotional condition of vulnerability. All of us are emotionally vulnerable when we go through profound life changes, whether desired or thrust upon us. Self-created protection is essential while the inner life is dramatically changing. When a casing is no longer needed, it is opened from within. |

Ripe Forms & Bulbs:
Natural form is a never-ending source of inspiration. As artist and gardener,
I am fascinated by the beautiful shapes of Fall bulbs, all hiding promises of the next Spring,
as well as the ripe bursting shapes of plants going to seed, going to harvest.
