SAGE SOHIER Photography:
"Capturing Beauty II"
"Peaceable Kingdom"
For years, I had photographed people with their companion animals.
But in 2008, I began also to photograph at a variety of animal rescues: refuges for exotic animals
that had been raised in captivity, wildlife rescues that rehabilitate and release animals back into the wild, dog and cat rescues, farm animal sanctuaries, and traditional family farms.
All the while, I remained focused on showing the unique bond between people and animals.
Most of the places I photographed were self-described “Mom and Pop” rescues, started by people with
huge commitment but limited funds. Some had become successfully self-sustaining 501c3 non-profits,
with enough donations to feed the animals and pay staff. Others were still struggling.
Many of the people I photographed have dedicated most of their adult lives to saving animals.
Those who run rescues and refuges give selflessly of their time, energy, and money.
Their incredible commitment and sacrifices preclude vacations and other aspects
of conventional life that most of us take for granted.
A book of this work, “PeaceableKingdom,” was published in 2021 by Kehrer Verlag.
