Wei Tai--Chinese Ink & Sumi-e on Watercolor and Rice Paper

A native of China, Wei Tai was born in 1944 in a rural village south of Shanghai.
His father was a well-known sculptor who encouraged his son to study art at an early age.
Tai attended the Shanghai Fine Arts Institute where he received formal training in
traditional Chinese painting methods, as well as Western artistic techniques, fashion design and textile arts.

Over time Wei Tai was appointed as Assistant Professor of Art and Fashion Design there
and later with his fashion skills, served seven years as Chief Designer for the China Silk Corporation.

He traveled extensively along China's old Silk Road studying classical artistic methods and color.

On his journeys, he observed ancient artifacts, seeing the change in color occurring with exposure to air.
In his famous "Xian Unearthed Series," Wei Tai attempted to capture the original colors.

In 1991 Wei Tai immigrated to Arizona where his Eastern subject matter and techniques
have been influenced by European and American art traditions,
resulting in an exquisite mixture and marriage of both.

Wei Tai’s paintings and sculptures are currently held in many private and public collections.
He has had one-man and group exhibitions in Shanghai, Tokyo, Milan, Cologne, Amsterdam and the US.
