DEBORAH WEISS
Winter 2023:
"A Winter's Tale"
Hand Cut Collage from Artist’s Dyed & Painted Papers:
My work has always been nature based. “Blooms” is a celebration of the contemporary botanical image.
I have used my own dyed and painted papers for these hand cut collages. Choosing to interpret the textures and organic shapes in blue and white is in reverence to the rich history of this color pairing.
First in China and later in Europe, blue and white wares were treasured.
Taking the bloom formations a step further,
I am also pursing multiple color palettes and the inclusion of vintage papers.

The exchange between terrain, climate, temperature and the elements is constant and transforming by the moment. My work is an exploration of the effects of atmospheric conditions on land, water and the resulting patina of time. These elements inform the work and at times determine the subject matter. There is an excavation and layering process that conceals and reveals visual information, each layer informing the next. Delicate surface markings (works on panel) and textures from salvaged boards (relief prints) are a visual record of this process. Subject matter is not predetermined, it is intuitive and emerges as the work develops. |

About Deborah's Monotypes:
Monotype is a printmaking process that offers a singular unique impression.
Unlike other types of printmaking the image is not editioned.
My monotypes are multi layered works on paper requiring a minimum of 3 runs through an etching press.
Initially an image is painted on to a plexiglass plate. Specifically to the way I work, this first layer is often
a combination of ink applied with a brayer [roller] and a paint brush. Selected areas are then removed or
“drawn away”. This will allow the white of the paper to show through.
After this plate is completed a dampened a sheet of printmaking paper is placed over the plate
which is now resting on the bed of the press. The paper and plate are transported beneath the roller
of the press and enough pressure is applied to transfer the image from the plate to the paper.
Subsequent layers are created the same way, each time wiping the plate clean and
layering new colors, brushwork and line work on to the same paper.
Often unpredictable elements emerge and the resulting image is rich
in color and depth from the numerous layers.
