Early in my career as an artist, while still a student, I discovered Durer’s painting “Great Piece of Turf” and have since then remained committed to depicting a portion of the marvel and beauty in the natural world. This place has always seemed to me an otherworldly realm, ever changing and often unpredictable. I identify with the realistic tradition and begin by studying my chosen subject, seeking out its essence/power in order to convey the ensuing connection I feel.
For the past ten years, egg tempera has proven to be the medium most sympathetic to my quest to reveal the detail, color, solidity, and subtlety in subjects that have captured my attention. (It is always these concerns, rather than the image for itself that inform my choice, though emotional attatchment soon follows.) The inherent nature of egg tempera imposes a slow and thoughtful working tempo which seems right for my purposes. This is a process that depends upon the application of layers of paint, just as nature builds by accretion. I feel a bond through my approach with artists of the past renowned for their spirit of enquiry even as I experience my connections to nature and art as a contemporary artist. |
